To begin with I am writing down the chronology of the family, as I [Pravin] know it today.  Our family lived in Kapadvanj, Gujarat and were Jains as far back as we  know.  According to known data, Jains were a part of Kapadvanj since the beginning of the town (about 1100 to 1200 hundred years ago).  A well known Jain Acharya Abhyadev Suri passed away in Kapadvanj in 1000 A.D.  A small memorial to him (called Pagala) exists to this day in an Upashrya.  Some Jains had come to Kapadvanj from Mewad (area around and just south of Udaipur) about 600 to 700 years ago.  Also another group had come about 400 years ago from Champaner, a city now only in ruins in south east Gujarat. Champaner is about 80 miles from Kapadvanj as plane will fly.  The present Jain community and obviously our family is decedent of these three groups of Jains as they intermarried over time. However we have names of our ancestors for about 200 to 250 years only.  Based upon Girdhar Dada having been born in 1885, if you consider 25 as average between generations you can count 125 years and Bhula Doshi was born around 1760.  Including my generation, that makes 8 generations of males.

We begin with Bhula Doshi.  He had two sons:

  1. Dayaldas

  2. Bhukhandas

Bhukahandas’ decedents are numerous and known to us.  We are descendant from Dayaldas, who had three sons:

  1. Mulji

  2. Kevaldas

  3. Motichand  - No known survivors.  (Perhaps a daughter -but as you might have noticed there are no names of daughters as per old system.)

Kevaldas’ decedents are also known to us. Anita met two of those decedents during the Kapadvanj picnic.  (Ami -wife of Tejas Shah as well as Varsha and her daughter Avani from upstate New York.)  We are descendant from Muljibhai, who had three sons:

  1. Karamchand

  2. Shivalal

  3. Motichand - No known survivors.

Shivalal’s survivors are known to us.  One of them Dr. Ramanlal V. Shah. (Raman Kaka was very well known in Kapadvanj for his medical practice and very helpful nature.)  We are descendant from Karamchand, who had two sons:

  1. Nathaji - No issue.

  2. Bhogilal    *Married Jamna from Godhra

Nathajibhai had no issue and his house later became Chiman Kaka's house.  Bhogilal was my great-grandfather whom I had known as a child.  He passed away in 1942 just after Chandrakant was born.  We have one remaining photo, which you have seen.  He was also the one who decided to change family name to Shah from Doshi.  Seems to me a couple of his cousins also did the same.  Bhogilal had seven daughters (three of whom we do not know and likely died at a young age) and two sons:

  1. Parsanbhen    *Married to Vadilal Girdharlal Teli - No known survivors.

(I remember her as a child, she was very sick and bedridden.  She had very bad rashes on her back as a result.

She lived on the ground floor of what would latter become our house and died in the early 1940’s.)

  1. Manekbhen    *Married to Hiralal

(One son who died young and one daughter who took diksha.  In her later years, she too wanted to take

diksha but Dada told her she was too old and fragile.  She died in the late 1940’s.)

  1. Samrathbhen    *Married to Chotalal Tarachand Gandhi

(Two daughters and one son, Shankarlal.  Shankarlal had two sons, Kasturlal and Mafatlal.  Kasturlal was a

teacher at the Municipal High School and Chandrakant and I both studied under him.)

  1. Chanchalbhen    *Married to Vadilal Limbabhai Gandhi - Five daughters and four sons:

  2. Lali    *Married Shankarlal Adiklal Pachiya

  3. Manibhen    *Married Vadilal Shamar Gandhi

(Sudha Kaki’s grandmother - mother of Gunvantbhai Vadilal Gandhi.  Son, Mukundbhai, is owner of

Royal Chemist a very well known pharmacy in Mumbai.)

  1. Champa    *Took Diksha and was known as Sadviji Chandrodaya

  2. Vimlabhen    *Married to Dr. Ramanlal V. Shah.  (Two sons and one daughter.)

  3. Tara    *Married to Jayantilal Adiklal

  4. Nagindas    *Married to Manibhen - Five daughters and five sons.

(Naginbhai was a very well known lawyer in the Kaira district and later on became a member of the

                                            Gujarat State Legislative Assembly.)

  1. Ramanbhai    *Married three times: Kiki, Kanchan, Padma                                                                 (Ramanbhai was also a lawyer and practiced in Nadiad.)

  2. Balubhai    *Married to Santa

  3. Manubhai    *Married to Chandanbhen

  4. Girdharlal    *Married to Rukshmani

  5. Raman - No issue

Girdhar dada was born in the 1880’s while his mother was living with her brothers in Godhra.  There is some question about the actual year as Manu kaka used to say that Girdhar dada was thirty when he was born making his birth year 1886.  Vimu foi says that he died at eighty-six years of age in 1975, making his birth year 1889.  From Sula Kaki we learned that Bhogi Dada through Jamna Ba out of the house after learning that she was once again pregnant.  After seven daughters, he was fed up with her and sent her back to her maternal home in Godhra.  After giving birth to a son, she returned to Kapadvanj with Girdhar Dada.  They later had another son, Raman, who died as a child shortly after a visit to Mumbai.  Dada believed it was a result of some type of water contamination and as a result never visited Mumbai as he felt it was cursed.  Rukhi Ba, however, would often visit Mumbai.  Dada later lived in Godhra for few years to take care of his Mama’s business since his cousins were too young to take care of it.  They all call him Muta Bhai  (elder brother), he become popular in Godhra's Jain Community where they too knew him as Muta Bhai.  The name stuck to him so much that all ten of his children (four brothers and six sisters) called him Muta Bhai and never father.  Girdharlal had ten surviving children:

  1. Dhiraj *Married to Keshavlal Somabhai Shah

  2. Champa *Married to Chimanlal Ratanchand Shah

  3. Chiman *Married to Lilavati Somabhai Doshi and then Shubhadra Chimanlal Gandhi

  4. Nagin *Married to Lilavati Shah

  5. Santa *Married to Ramanlal Panachand Teli

  6. Manu *Married to Sulochna Ramanlal Parikh

  7. Prabha *Married to Kasturbhai Manilal Gandhi

  8. Vimla *Married Ramanlal Mangaldas Doshi

  9. Kika *Married to Sarda Manilal Gandhi

  10. Sushila *Married to Umakant Naginlal Gandhi

Nagindas was my father, so this is my full name:
